Interested in Writing for In Flight USA?

Introduction: Thank you for your interest in In Flight USA. We are a monthly magazine for the general aviation and business aviation enthusiast with a circulation of 40,000 readers. We are excited to welcome you to our family of writers. The following guidelines will give you a sense of what we look for and how best to format your work. We enjoy newsworthy articles, aviation stories, and stories based on personal experiences.

Word Count: We find that the most engaging articles have a minimum word count of 500 words and a maximum of 2,000 words. This is not a steadfast rule. We accept shorter and longer articles if we find them engaging.

Files: Please send your article in Microsoft Word (.doc or .dox). We also accept Apple Pages 2008 to 2011. Please do not send your article in PDF or plain text. Do not send your copy in the body of an email.

Size and Font: Articles and editorials should be in size 12 and in a serif font (Times, Times New Roman, or Cambria). Articles should be single-spaced and there should not be returns within paragraphs. Allow the word processor to space the lines.

Appropriateness: While we mainly have an adult audience, please be sensitive to sexual scenes, foul language, violence, and other damaging content.

Byline: Write your name or pen name below the title. The word “by” is not necessary. It will be added for you.

Artwork: While not a requirement, it is always nice to have accompanying artwork. Please do not send more than five photos, as space is limited. All photos should be 300 dpi or higher. Black and white or color is acceptable. If you would like to submit more or larger artwork, please contact the editor.

Compensation: In Flight USA allows its writers and artists to trade ads. In other words, a writer is given a 1/4-page ad in exchange for his or her article. Ads should be aviation related. To send camera-ready work or have an ad built, please contact the editor or graphic artist. For those writers who do not have an ad to run, they are paid $1 per column inch and $10 per photo. In addition, writers are given a free subscription and will receive a free magazine for each issue in which their work is featured.

Deadlines: Articles are due the 20th of each month before the month of the issue the writer is submitting to. In other words, if a writer plans to submit a story for October, it is due September 20. This may change due to holidays or other circumstances. Should this situation arise, the editor will contact you.

Rights: The editor and staff reserve the right to edit the work as they see fit. Writers may not see a proof. We accept previously published articles, but we ask that you refrain from submitting work that is under consideration elsewhere. You may submit it and publish it elsewhere after the issue of In Flight USA is published. You will be notified when that occurs. All rights revert back to the author upon publication.

Thank you for your interest!

We look forward to receiving your work!
