The real reason more kids don't go into aviation

What keeps our future pilots firmly planted on Earth?

by Ms. Syd Blue, Commercial Pilot, Author, Owner of an aerial surveillance company protecting national security assets and infrastructure from California to Texas

What's the #1 thing kids ask about flying? People often think money is the biggest factor keeping kids from going into aviation, but there is also another major deterrent. Kids contact me from my YouTube channel (YouTube.com/FlyGirlFlyGirl) which has had 250,000 views and ask me questions. Can you guess the thing they want to know the most? You may be surprised.

It's why I wrote "FlyGirl," a novel read in middle schools and featured at the FAA library. A major trend in kids of this generation, I also hear this question when I speak to schools. Helping kids overcome obstacles such as this starts with inspiring them with our future in the sky and space. Novels with science elements pique interest in astronomy, aviation and science-- I've heard from kids who decided to go on a STEM path (bioengineering, piloting, etc.) after reading "Circle" or "FlyGirl." It might have been the bioengineered seal-skin jet (don't worry, no animals were harmed!) or the X planes inspired by Edwards AFB as I was flying through their airspace doing aerial surveillance. In "Circle," an extraterrestrial girl crashes into our world and has to get home with the one thing her civilization needs to survive. (The kids love the strange material her jet is made out of.) And "FlyGirl" is about a 16-year-old girl who learns to fly the hard way and in the process becomes Pilot-in-Command of her life.
